Shed hunting or antler hunting is always a great time. Hiking in the mountains, river bottoms, or rolling hills is one of the most relaxing things one can do. Looking for brown gold is a great family activity and a great way to keep those legs in shape during the off-season.
Some of the tips I have for a successful shed hunting trip are:

  • Slow down when hiking to make sure you are covering everything with your eyes.
  • Pay attention to sign. This means tracks, droppings, and where animals have been foraging.
  • Once in good sign, make sure that you grid through that area. If hiking with a partner, stay 30-50 yards apart and grid that area until the sign goes away or you have covered it all.
  • I personally like cloudy days for shed hunting as it is easier on the eyes and makes finding sheds a little easier.
  • Don’t be afraid to get into the thick stuff! A lot of times animals will drop that early Christmas present in the thickets.

Have fun while you’re out and enjoy the outdoors, hopefully, you will find some of that brown gold!
